In Costa Rica, visitors will have the privilege of enjoying a variety of settings and ecosystem all within walking distance of each other.

Costa Rica, a small country with only 51100 square kilometers, makes up 0.03% of the planet's surface but contains an impressive number of plant and animal life: about 6 percent of global biodiversity.

Despite its small size, Costa Rica has a greater biodiversity than Europe or North America.

This abundance of wildlife is partly due to the geographical position of the country that forms a land bridge between North and South America and its environmental protection policies.

The huge diversity of Costa Rica attracts hundreds of scientists from around the world.

The country's rainforests are complex biological communities where a single hectare can accommodate nearly 100 species of trees.

They are home to more than 9,000 recorded species of plants, including 1,500 species of orchids. More than 850 species of birds flying over the rainforests of Costa Rica, many more than have been seen in North America, Europe or Australia: 50 species of hummingbirds, 15 parrots (including the exotic scarlet macaw), six species toucans, tanagers and 45 of anthills and 20 quetzales, with its shimmering green plumage, among others.

In Costa Rica more than 200 species of mammals have on record: as the howler monkeys, spider, white-faced capuchin and squirrel; sloths; anteaters; armadillos; agoutis; pizotes; peccary (wild pig); martillas, raccoons, squirrels and bats and endangered species like the jaguar and tapir. For Costa Rica hover over 2000 species of butterflies (10% of the butterfly species in the world).

One of the most impressive is the huge morpho butterfly electric blue that sometimes can be seen flying over the rivers during sunny days.

Costa Rica is also home to about 150 species of amphibians, some of which are extremely colorful and exotic as the tree frog, the frog with red eyes and some poisonous frogs.

More than 200 species of reptiles living in Costa Rica: snakes, lizards, crocodiles, turtles and 14 species including the giant leatherback, Kemp's ridley, hawksbill and loggerhead.
